BIO
Rooted in a bicultural identity both American and Chinese, Liu’s work is a fusion of visual heritage and innovation. Her practice bridges the ancient artistic tradition of shanshui (mountain-water painting) with the medium and tempo of contemporary life. Melding the brushwork of Chinese shanshui and calligraphic painting with the immediacy of acrylic paint, airbrush, and mixed media, Liu’s art insists on the continued relevance of traditional Chinese aesthetics as a vital mode of reflection, memory, and healing.
Educated at the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a BFA in Fine Art and a BA in Media Studies, Liu approaches her practice with both critical depth and technical fluency. Her background in media theory sharpens her awareness of how information, art, and identity circulate at a time when cultural homogenization threatens the survival of distinct visual languages. This informs her artistic direction: a contemporary reinterpretation of tradition, preserving the lore, craft, and philosophical integrity of Chinese art as nostalgic revival necessary to construct the visual language for our time.
Liu’s imagery is at once lush and introspective, mythological and modern, conjuring emotional and symbolic terrains that explore themes of ancestry, feminine interiority, and cultural continuity. Through this, Liu offers a rare kind of clarity though paintings that are both deeply rooted and boldly forward-facing, reimagining what it means to honor tradition while actively evolving it for future generations.
Liu has had a solo exhibition at H Foundation for the Arts LA, and recent group exhibitions include Charlie James Gallery LA, Good Mother Gallery (Oakland/LA), New Image Art LA, and Unveil Gallery LA.
