BIO
Ann Liu AKA “CREATRIX” (b. 2000) is a Chinese-American Los Angeles-based artist, model, and founder originally from the Bay Area.
Inspired by deeply rooted traditions of ancestral piety and her experience of their subversion by Americana, Ann conceives abstract concepts of sensuality, femininity, and healing through supra-realist figuration. Her art involves avid introspection and self-analysis-as-muse, acknowledging the contradictions of narcissism and vulnerability in today's cultural climate. While maturing as a feminist and spiritual woman in the age of surveillance capitalism, Ann grapples with the hilarity of painting her “feelings” and thus enabling her own commodity fetishism, aspiring towards a meta approach of dissecting the anxieties, ironies, and pressures of “succeeding” online as a POC female creative in the era of personal branding and niche-ification. Vibrant, emotional, and visceral, her meticulous work reflects a fascination with the minutiae of life experience, transmuting everything ranging from pain to euphoria with an artist’s hand that applies contemporary technique and aestheticism to traditional Chinese 国画 (guohua) philosophies of creativity.
With a BFA in Fine Art and BA in Media Studies from UC Berkeley, she has previously exhibited in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, & Miami. Accomplished in the Acrylic medium, Ann's practice involves airbrush, painting, & embellishment with semi-precious materials.
