Inspired by the nuances of a multicultural personal narrative, Liu’s work grapples with the hybridity and frictions between Chinese traditional values and the American Dream. In response to rampant cultural homogenization in the digital age, Liu is curious about preserving ancient Chinese culture, lore, and history through contemporary artistic representation. Her style intertwines modern aestheticism with traditional Chinese calligraphic painting styles — a dance between past and present. Liu delves into abstract concepts of femininity, pleasure, and healing through vivid introspection and self-analysis. Vibrant and visceral, her meticulous figurative pieces mythologize and romanticize those singular experiences which mark the essence of living life.
Ann holds a BFA in Fine Art and a BA in Media Studies, graduating with honors from University of California, Berkeley. A multi-dimensional creative ccomplished in the acrylic medium, Ann's painting practice involves airbrushing, painting, and mixed media embellishment.
ANN LIU 刘谙 AKA “CREATRIX” (b. 2000) is a Chinese-American artist based in Los Angeles, originally from the Bay Area.
